The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Program 2022 provides fully funded scholarships for international students. There is an opportunity to study for a PhD with this scholarship. The scholarship is valued at $50,000 per year for three years.

Vanier Canadian Government Scholarships are available to international students who wish to pursue doctoral studies at top Canadian universities.  The Varier Canada Graduate Scholarship is worth $50,000 per year for three years during doctoral studies. We are seeking to attract and retain world-class doctoral students in the natural sciences and/or engineering, social sciences and humanities, and health sciences who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high level of scholarly achievement.

In 2008, the Government of Canada launched the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) to strengthen Canada’s ability to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and establish Canada as a global center of research excellence. Varier Scholars display leadership qualities and a high level of achievement in graduate studies in the natural sciences and/or engineering, social sciences and humanities, and health. These scholarships are for doctoral degrees (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD degrees).

Eligibility Criteria Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship 2022

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Required Language: English 
  • Eligible Countries. Permanent residents of Canada, Canadian citizens, and foreign nationals
  • Applicants must be pursuing their first doctorate (including joint undergraduate/graduate research programs such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, and JD/PhD – if the program has a demonstrated and significant research component). Funding is only available for the PhD portion of a combined degree;
  • As of May 1, 2022, you should not have completed more than 20 months of doctoral studies
  • Only one Canadian institution may nominate you, and it must have received an. Vanier CGS quota
  • After receiving funding, you should plan on undertaking full-time doctoral (or joint graduate program, such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) studies and research at the institution where you are nominated;
  • A doctoral degree cannot be pursued or completed if you hold, or have held, a scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
  • In each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent, you should have achieved a first-class average. For more information about what constitutes a first-class average, applicants are encouraged to contact the institution.

 

How to Apply for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) 2022?

Visit the official website, provided at the end. However, here are important instructions on how to apply for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships:

Step 1: Research Canadian institutions using . Universities Canada website. Our recommendation is to visit each university’s website and thoroughly research the program in which you are interested in completing your doctorate degree, as well as the supervisors for your proposed research.

Step 2: Consult the Vanier CGS quota page . Make sure the institution of your choice has a quota for the year in which you are applying.

  • Follow these steps to apply:
    • Applications can be initiated in one of two ways. The student notifies the faculty of graduate studies at the selected institution of their intent to apply to the Vanier CGS program; or
    • Nominations are initiated by the institution by contacting the desired candidate.
    • Applications are prepared by the student and submitted to the nominating institution by their internal deadline (set in ResearchNet by the nominating institution) ResearchNet application system.
    • The nominating institution performs the internal candidate selection process.
    • Nominations are forwarded by the nominating institution to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat) by November 2, 2021 (20:30 Eastern Time).
    • The review process is coordinated by the Secretariat.
    • The Secretariat presents its recommendations to the Tri-Agency Programs (TAP) Steering Committee.
    • The TAP Steering Committee approves the final decisions for the Vanier CGS program.
    • Nominated candidates will be notified of the competition results in April 2022.
  • Applicants must be nominated by the institution where they wish to study. The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) cannot be applied for directly.
  • The candidate should verify the institutional deadlines with the administrator at the nominating institution.
  • Candidates should read the Selection Committee Guide prior to commencing their application. The guide includes information on how to evaluate the three evaluation criteria and lists the three criteria.
  • The Secretariat has curated a list of resources to help applicants. Referees and evaluators consider equity, diversity, and inclusion when evaluating applications. Before writing an application, applicants are encouraged to review the resources.

Notes regarding the Vanier Application:

  • Students who have completed the Vanier CGS electronic application through ResearchNet are required to submit their application online Nominations will be submitted by a Canadian institution. Vanier CGS does not accept direct applications.
  • Students who wish to apply for a Vanier CGS should verify that the institution to which they are applying for doctoral studies has a Vanier CGS quota. After that, they must inform the institution that they wish to apply for a Vanier CGS.
  • Candidates must be notified by the institution if their application is not selected for nomination to the Secretariat. Depending on the institution, the notification may occur at a different time.
  • A nomination will be forwarded to the Secretariat based on the institution’s quota.
  • A student can only be nominated once. A student must choose one institution to nominate for a Vanier CGS if more than one institution is interested in nominating them. We will not accept multiple nominations.
  • Students are responsible for contacting the institution for more information about selecting the appropriate federal granting agency, identifying the appropriate person within a department or faculty, and for advice about how best to present the information in their application.

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship results will be announced in early April 2022.
